Food Word Search Printable

Food word search puzzles, from pizza to paella and a World Food Day list, to print or play online.

This free food word search makes a grid of food words that you can solve on screen or print for a class, a party or a quiet half hour. It runs in your web browser, with no sign-up and no download. The page opens on the Foods topic: 34 everyday food words in a 15×15 grid at Medium difficulty.

Pick Foods of the world for dishes such as sushi, paella and biryani, or World Food Day for words about farming, harvests and hunger. Fruits, Vegetables, Meals and Cooking are here too. You can also type your own list of words, such as a menu or a recipe. Nothing you make is uploaded, and the puzzles are yours to use at home, at school or in class.

The food sheets are yours to use at home, in class or in products you sell, such as Etsy activity packs.

  1. Open the Topic menu and choose Foods for everyday food words, Foods of the world for dishes, or World Food Day for farming and hunger words.
  2. Set Grid size. The default is 15×15. Use 10×10 for younger players.
  3. Set Difficulty to Easy, Medium, Hard or Expert. The hint line under the menu explains which directions each level uses.
  4. Adjust Number of words from 4 to 60. The tool starts at a good number for the grid size you chose.
  5. To use your own words, choose My own words, type a title, then type your words in the Your words box. Put one word per line, or separate them with commas or semicolons. Words that are left out are listed with the reason.
  6. Click or tap the first letter of a word, then its last letter. Found words get a coloured outline and a tick in Find these words. If you get stuck, press Hint or Show answers.
  7. Open the Print panel. Choose the number of Copies, the Paper size (Letter or A4) and the Answer keys option. Then press Print puzzles + answer keys.
  8. Press Copy link to share the exact same puzzle.

On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to move and Enter or Space to mark letters. Press Next puzzle for a new grid with the same settings. Your game is saved in this browser, so reloading the page continues it. To save the printout as a PDF, choose Save as PDF in the print window.

The page offers seven food topics. Each new puzzle picks as many words from the topic as the Number of words setting asks for (18 on the 15×15 grid), at random, so every puzzle mixes them differently. The three topics made for this page are:

Foods (34 words, 3 to 8 letters, suited to young players): Pizza, Pasta, Rice, Bread, Cheese, Apple, Banana, Carrot, Burger, Fries, Salad, Soup, Taco, Noodles, Cookie, Cake, Pie, Egg, Milk, Yogurt, Cereal, Pancake, Popcorn, Grapes, Peas, Beans, Corn, Chicken, Fish, Honey, Cherry, Muffin, Tomato, Potato.

The page also offers the Fruits, Vegetables, Meals and Cooking topics, which are shared with the rest of the site.

The difficulty level sets the directions. On Easy, words run only left to right and top to bottom, and they never cross. Medium adds diagonals down-right and up-right, still never backwards, and words may cross where their letters agree. Hard uses all eight directions, including backwards, and Expert also tries crossings first. The default puzzle is a worked example you can open at /food-word-search/?seed=demo1. It contains 18 words. RICE starts in row 11, column 11 and runs diagonally up to the right, APPLE starts in row 14, column 7 and runs diagonally up to the right, and POTATO starts in row 15, column 5 and runs left to right.

What is World Food Day?

World Food Day is held every year on 16 October. It marks the day in 1945 when the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was founded, and it is used to draw attention to hunger and to how food is grown and shared. Many schools and community groups mark it with a food drive, a class discussion or an activity sheet.

The World Food Day topic is built for that kind of activity. Its words cover crops (Wheat, Rice, Maize, Cassava, Millet), farming (Soil, Seeds, Irrigation, Harvest), the problem (Hunger, Famine, Drought) and what people can do (Donate, Volunteer, Food bank, Sharing). Print a set with the answer keys, hand one to each student, and ask them to pick three words to talk about.

Can I make a word search from my own menu or recipe?

Yes. Choose My own words and type or paste the words, one per line. A menu, a shopping list, a list of ingredients or the dishes for a class party all work. Each word is placed once, and words that are left out are listed with the reason, usually because the word is longer than the grid.

How do I make a food word search easier or harder?

For young players, choose the Foods topic, a 10×10 grid and Easy difficulty. The words are short and run only left to right and top to bottom. For adults, choose Foods of the world with a bigger grid and Hard or Expert difficulty, where words also run backwards and cross each other. Long names such as Bibimbap, Schnitzel and Moussaka are a good test.
