Large Print Word Search

Big letters, a big word list and one puzzle per page, to print or solve on screen.

A large print word search is a word search with bigger letters, bigger grid cells and a bigger word list, so it is easier to read. This free word search maker creates one in your web browser: tick Large print, pick a topic and a grid size, and the puzzle appears on the page, ready to play on screen or print. There is no sign-up and no download. The page opens with Large print already ticked, set to the Fruits topic, a 12×12 grid, Medium difficulty and 10 words. If you want the biggest letters, choose an 8×8 or 10×10 grid with Large print.
  1. Make sure Large print is ticked. It is already ticked when the page opens.
  2. Choose a Topic from the menu, or pick Random topic for a different theme with each new puzzle.
  3. Set the Grid size and Difficulty. For the largest letters, pick 8×8 or 10×10.
  4. Find a word by clicking or tapping its first letter, then its last letter. With a mouse, you can also drag. A found word gets a coloured outline and is ticked in “Find these words”.
  5. If you get stuck, press Hint to make the first letter of an unfound word flash, or Show answers to outline every word.
  6. Press Next puzzle for a new grid with the same settings.

Under More options you can change the Letter case, the Word list order and whether the word list is hidden. Copy link saves all your settings and the exact puzzle, so you can share it with a class or a friend.

  1. Open the Print panel.
  2. Set Copies from 1 to 20. Each copy has a different arrangement of letters.
  3. Choose Paper size: Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4.
  4. Choose Answer keys: Four per page or One per page.
  5. Click Print puzzles + answer keys, Print puzzles only or Print answer keys only. To save a PDF instead, choose “Save as PDF” in the print window.

Large print makes the letters and grid cells bigger than in a standard puzzle, and it sets a bigger word list to match. For the biggest letters, choose an 8×8 or 10×10 grid with Large print, because a smaller grid gives each letter more room on the page.

Large print is a setting, not a separate puzzle type. When it is ticked, the tool draws bigger cells and letters and limits the grid sizes to 8×8, 10×10, 12×12 and 15×15. Each puzzle prints on its own page, so the letters are not squeezed in beside another puzzle. The Letter case option lets you choose UPPER CASE or lower case for both the grid and the word list.

What is the largest grid in large print?

The largest grid in large print is 15×15. With Large print ticked, the Grid size menu stops at 15×15, so the 18×18, 20×20, 25×25 and 30×30 sizes are not offered.

Large print also changes how many words you get. The tool uses about 70% of the usual number of words, with a minimum of 6. The default 12×12 puzzle on this page starts with 10 words, where a standard 12×12 grid starts with 14. A 15×15 large print grid starts with roughly 13 words, where a standard 15×15 starts with 18.

Large print does not change the difficulty rules. On Easy, words run only left to right and top to bottom, and they never cross. Medium adds diagonal words running down-right and up-right, but no backwards words. Hard and Expert allow all eight directions, including backwards and upward words.

Which topics work best in large print?

Topics with short words fit best, because a large print grid is at most 15×15: Fruits, Colors, Family, Pets, Weather or the easy holiday lists. Long-word topics such as Countries or Big words still work, but fewer of their words fit, and the tool tells you when it uses fewer than you asked for. Your own list works too: choose My own words and type names, places or anything else, up to 15 letters each.

Frequently asked questions

Can I print large print word searches with answers?

Yes. Use the Print panel and choose Print puzzles + answer keys. Answer keys print after the puzzles, with the words outlined, and they print one per page by default. You can switch to Four per page if you want fewer pages.

Is there a large print word search for seniors?

The tool has no separate senior setting, but the Large print option gives you the bigger letters that make puzzles easier to read. Tick Large print, choose a topic you enjoy, and pick an 8×8 or 10×10 grid. Set the difficulty to Easy, so words run only across and down and never cross. Hand a printed copy to each person and keep the answer key for yourself, or play on a tablet, where you tap the first and last letter of each word.

Is it free?

Yes. Everything runs in your web browser. It is free, needs no sign-up and has no download. Nothing you type or create is uploaded, and your own words stay in the browser.

Can I print a large print word search on A4 paper?

Yes. In the Print panel, choose A4 under Paper size. Choose Letter (8.5 × 11 in) if you use US paper. Each puzzle prints on its own page with Name and Date lines.

Why does my large print word search have fewer words?

Large print uses about 70% of the usual number of words for the grid size, with at least 6 words. If a topic has fewer words that fit the grid, the tool uses all that fit and tells you so.
