Word Search Puzzles for Adults

Grown-up topics in bigger, harder grids, to print or to solve on screen.

Word search puzzles for adults are letter grids with a list of hidden words to find, and this free tool makes them for you. It runs in your web browser, with no sign-up and nothing to download. The page opens with a Countries puzzle on an 18×18 grid set to Hard: 22 countries picked from a list of 60, different for every new puzzle. You can also pick other adult topics, such as US states, world capitals, cooking, gardening, travel and big words. Solve the puzzle on screen with a timer and hints, or print up to 20 copies, each with a different layout. A large print option suits seniors and anyone with tired eyes. Your own word lists stay in your browser and are never uploaded.

How to make word search puzzles for adults

  1. Choose a topic. Adult topics are listed first under For adults. Music and Science come next, and every other topic is under More topics.
  2. Set the grid size, from 8×8 up to 30×30. The page starts at 18×18.
  3. Set the number of words, from 4 to 60. The tool starts with a sensible number for your grid size.
  4. Pick a difficulty: Easy, Medium, Hard or Expert. Read the hint line under your choice before you continue.
  5. Tick Large print for bigger letters, a bigger word list and grids up to 15×15.
  6. Open More options to change letter case, the word list order, whether the word list is hidden, or to add a hidden message of up to 40 characters.
  7. Solve the puzzle on screen. Use Hint if you are stuck, or Show answers to outline every word.
  8. Open the Print panel, choose Copies, Paper size and Answer keys, then click Print puzzles + answer keys. In the print window, choose Save as PDF if you want a file.
  9. Click Copy link to share the exact same puzzle with a friend, class or newsletter.

Keyboard players can move with the arrow keys and mark a letter with Enter or Space. The game is saved in your browser, so reloading the page continues where you left off.

What topics are good for adults?

Good adult topics have a clear set of words that people already know, such as countries, US states, world capitals, cooking, gardening, travel and big words. The For adults group holds these topics, and Music and Science are listed next to them. Choose a topic that matches the interests of the person solving, because familiar words are quicker to spot.

Check the word count against your grid. If a topic has fewer words that fit the grid, the tool uses all of the words that fit and tells you so. A short list on a large grid can leave the puzzle feeling empty, so try a smaller grid or a bigger topic.

Can I print word searches for adults?

Yes. Each printed puzzle sits on its own page, with a title such as “Halloween Word Search”, the size and level, Name and Date lines, the grid, and a “Find these words:” list with a checkbox beside each word. Copy 1 is the puzzle you see on screen. Each copy after it has a different arrangement, and when a topic has more words than fit, each copy can have a different set of words.

You can print on Letter or A4 paper. Answer keys can be printed four per page or one per page, with the words outlined in the grid. Use the buttons to print puzzles and answer keys together, the puzzles only, or the answer keys only.

Are there large print word searches for seniors?

Yes. Tick Large print to get bigger letters and a bigger word list. Large print grids go up to 15×15 and use about 70% of the words, which keeps each puzzle easier to scan. You can also open the large print word search page. Easy or Medium is a gentler start for a first puzzle.

Can I play them online?

Yes. Puzzles run in your browser, with no download and no sign-up. Click or tap the first letter of a word, then the last letter. With a mouse you can also drag across the letters. A found word gets a coloured outline and its box in “Find these words” is ticked. A wrong pick shows “That is not one of the words. Try again.”

The status line shows “Found x of y” and a timer. Hint makes the first letter of an unfound word flash. When every word is found, the tool shows “Puzzle complete in mm:ss”. Next puzzle makes a new grid with the same settings.

How hard are they?

Difficulty depends on the directions the words can run. Easy words run only left to right and top to bottom, and they never cross. Medium adds diagonals running down-right and up-right, but never backwards. Hard uses all eight directions, including backwards, and words may cross. Expert uses all eight directions, tries crossings first, and builds the filler from the hidden words’ own letters, so the whole grid looks alike.

The page’s default puzzle is Hard, with 22 words. For example, NORWAY starts in row 7, column 10 and runs diagonally up to the right. You can open this puzzle and check it.

To solve faster, start with words that have an unusual letter (Q, X, Z, J, K) or a double letter (OO, LL, SS) and look for that first. Take the first letter of a word and check all eight neighbouring squares for its second letter. Find the longest words first, and cross words off as you go. On Hard and Expert, also read backwards and up.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to make and solve word search puzzles for adults?

Yes. The tool is free, with no sign-up and no download. Nothing is uploaded, and your own words never leave your browser.

What is a hidden message, and how do I use one?

A hidden message can be up to 40 characters long. Its letters fill the first empty squares, reading left to right and top to bottom. After the solver finds every word, the first leftover letters, read in the same order, spell the message. The answer key shades those squares so the message is visible.

Can I hide the word list?

Yes. Turn on “Hide the word list” under More options. The printed puzzle then says how many words to find, and on screen each word appears in the list once it is found.

Can I share the same puzzle with someone else?

Yes. Click Copy link to get an address that holds your settings and a seed, so it opens the exact same puzzle. Next puzzle creates a new grid with the same settings.

Could a short word be confused with a longer word that contains it?

Not in the way you might expect. A word that is part of a longer word, such as CAT inside CATERPILLAR, counts only where it was placed. The generator makes sure each hidden word appears exactly once in the grid.

Are the filler letters random?

On Easy, Medium and Hard they are random letters A–Z, checked so they never spell a rude word or a second copy of a hidden word. On Expert they are drawn from the hidden words’ own letters, so the grid looks alike.

What do the word list order and letter case options change?

Word list order can be A–Z, Short to long, or As listed, which keeps the order of your own words. Letter case shows the grid and list in UPPER CASE or lower case.

Does the game survive a page reload?

Yes. The game is saved in your browser, so reloading the page continues it.
